Zara, and co are not really my cup of tea. I would like to return to a time where folks had fewer clothes but they were unique, durable and loved for more than until the first wash. A frustration, became an interest, then an idea and now (hopefully a successful) endeavour.
Slow fashion is the idea that compulsive clothes shopping is abusive to those who make them, not helping those who buy and pollutes the environment of those who have to deal with the waste generated. Therefore, we need to think more about what, why and how clothes are made, bought and disposed of. I choose to contribute to helping our society move away from a model that indeed generates truck loads of money but is not a good thing, in my opinion.
Dutch process/block wax fabric, known as Ankara or Kitenge (pagne or boubou in French) is emblematic of many African cultures. As a child I was told that my natural hair and my favourite “lapa” were not to be seen outside of my home or even in it if European folks were about. I always thought that stupid. For my graduation in 2000 I argued with my mama to wear a traditional gown from our country. She won. The seed of an idea in my mind started to grow...gwenon gwenon storyman say, here is SiGeVeux.
