Choosing fabric is hard to do!
Several ladies have told me that they find it a bit stressful and overwhelming to choose the right fabric for their garment. Not everyone is African (technically yes, I know basic anthropology but you know what I mean) and no one wants to go viral for being problematic.
My objective with SGV is to promote spread an appreciation, understanding and respect for cultural and aesthetic elements commonly found on the Continent and in the Diaspora.
When you place you order with SiGeVeux (https://sigeveux.weebly.com/read-before-you-order.html) we ask for your three favourite colours and general pattern preferences such as botanical like these…

Or geometric like these two…
Some patterns are more symbolic, trying to say something...
We email you a selection of fabrics, narrowing the plethora to a choice between 3 to 5 fabrics until you make a decision.
Slow fashion is about taking our time and working together to create a garment you will cherish, value and wear for years to come.
Wax fabric is mostly produced in Europe and originates in Indonesia...soooo relax, nothing problematically appropriated here.
However, the colours, designs do have some degree of importance and for folks who are new to wax the process of choosing their fabric can become quite overwhelming.
Thankfully, Africaimports.com has a great little booklet you can download here:
https://blog.africaimports.com/wordpress/2008/10/african-fabrics-the-history-and-background-part-1/
The TL:DR of it is that there are almost as many fabric types on the continent as there are cultures. Wax print is just one of them so technically “African fabric” is not a thing but a category of something.
The booklet covers also the significance of different colours, when various fabrics or colours are worn and jewelry.
It is a quick read, and is illustrated with examples of traditional or typical tailoring. I hope this pdf will help you with your order and finding your way through the seemingly endless designs and glut of colours.
